Mardi Gras on the Coast Erupts

Mardi Gras 2014 Pensacola

There are actually five seasons on the Gulf Coast, Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall — and the Mardi Gras season. We Laissez les bons temps rouler, let the good times roll, with grand style for months.

Mardi Gras is known as a season of beads, parades, Mardi Gras balls, moon pies and king cakes, but there is, like so many other holidays, a religious basis for the holiday. Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday) festivities, begin on or after Epiphany or Kings day and culminates the day before Ash Wednesday. The reason it is called Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is because you feast or get fat on rich foods before you give them up for Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday.

There are Krewes in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties with themes like; Krewe of Left Feet, Krewe of Bad Habits, Krewe of Wrecks, Krewe of Jesters, Krewe of Nerieds and so many more. Here is the list of Pensacola Krewes: www.pensacolamardigras.com/krewes-of-mardi-gras and Pensacola Beach Krewes: www.pensacolabeachmardigras.com

Purple, green and gold are the colors of Mardi Gras. Craft stores and grocery stores are loaded with beads and craft items related to Mardi Gras. Michael’s and Hobby Lobby are two that stock large quantities of Mardi Gras items. The Pensacola Parade People, www.paradepeople.com are another source for Mardi Gras trinkets.
