Pensacola tends to be a quiet place to visit outside of the summer when thousands of people show up to enjoy our beaches. This past weekend, Pensacon 2014 was held at the Bay Center in downtown Pensacola and was able bring 10,000 plus people to our little town in its’ first year! Pensacon definitely made an impact and solidified a place as a “must-attend” event.
The layout of Pensacon was quite similar to other conventions where similar groups were located in the same place. The first floor housed a large number of vendors including local vendors like Price Busters Games. Other first floor vendors included toy, comic and even book sellers. Some of the more notable sections and tables included a full size Dr. Who TARDIS, RJ Haddy (Syfy’s Face Off), famous Star Wars novelist Timothy Zahn and the always fun Parjai Squad of the 501st Legion. You could see anything from a fully functional R2-D2 to a Tusken Raider or even Chewbacca.
The second floor held the Celebrity area, Panel Rooms and a large portion of comic book and animation artists. The third floor was home to any group that wanted to set up tables for the weekend. Some of my favorite groups included the “Gulf Coast Who’s Who of Who”, the “Pensacola Roller Gurlz” and the “Pensacola Costumers Guild”.
I was able to attend this as part of a gaming & nerd/geek culture website and podcast (startselect.net). The competitive gaming room (setup by SuperCon 2K) that offered prizes was fun to participate in and I was able to meet some of my more nerdy idols like Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1) and Billy Dee Williams (Lando). All of them were incredibly nice, liked Pensacola and enthusiastically wanted to come back.
At this time, it’s been confirmed that Pensacon will be back next February. If Pensacon 2015 is anything like their first year or better, this is going to be an event that will be talked about even in a galaxy, far, far away.
