Funbox Monthly – We Ship You Rip
Some really exciting things are happening in our area and this is definitely one of them. Funbox Monthly is a new monthly subscription service started by Skateboarders for skateboarders.
Entrepreneur and local skateboarder Tim Thompson carved out some time in his busy schedule to answer some questions about his new and exciting business and what it has to offer.
O&A: How long have you been skateboarding?
THOMPSON: My dear, sweet grandma bought me my first board on my 11th birthday from Innerlight in Harbour Town, Gulf Breeze. Mike Bazerque sold it to us. So almost 20 years.
O&A: Are you the sole proprietor or do you have a business partner(s)?
THOMPSON: I’m a sole proprietor. As we build a team and grow, I would like offer percentage ownerships to the team. I feel that is the best incentive to core employees and it drives people to fully reach their potential.
O&A: When was the official launch of Funbox Monthly?
THOMPSON: January 1st funboxmonthly.com went live. We are using January as a sort of soft opening. Since I’ve had to do everything from web development, partner acquisitions, social media management to all the graphic design there have definitely been some kinks to work out. It’s a labor of love though and just learning new skills has been rewarding enough already.
O&A: How did you come up with the concept of the subscription?
THOMPSON: Well, monthly subscriptions boxes are not a new concept, however each one is unique in their service. We want to be the first to bring the small, low priced monthly box to the skate industry.
O&A: What is the cost of Funbox Monthly?
THOMPSON: The cost is $19.99 per month for the monthly subscription. If you sign up for 12 months you can save $40 bucks and get them for about $16.67 per month. We are currently running a $5 off your first Funbox when you use coupon code funbox5.
O&A: What does a Funbox Monthly offer?
THOMPSON: Every month the subscribers receive 5-10 handpicked products which can retail up to $50. The items are endless because we encourage our partners to be creative. We’ve already had companies making specialty items for us. One part of our service is to provide media to skateboarders via skate videos and zines. Couple that with items like grip tape, shirts, hats, bearings, stickers etc. and you see how a skateboarder could really get excited about this. I see grown men’s eyes light up when they open it. Skateboarders stay kids at heart.
O&A: How do people order?
THOMPSON: It’s easy just go to funboxmonthly.com and click the sign up page.
O&A: Why did you want to take on this project?
THOMPSON: I wanted to create a business model that would enable me to be part of the skateboard world and actually give back to a community that has given me so much. It is really a two sided model. The companies we work with have will have direct access to their core demographic and nothing promotes your brand better than having potential customers directly engage with your product. I believe there is more to business than buying low and selling high. I want to be able to sleep at night.
O&A: Who are you looking for to subscribe?
THOMPSON: Anyone who rides, rode or is looking to ride a skateboard. Age/gender isn’t really relative. I’d like to quote Jay Adams ( original members of Z-Boys skateboarding team),”You don’t quit skateboarding because you get old. You get old because you quit skateboarding.”
O&A: How many members so far?
THOMPSON: We had our official launch party and contest in Jacksonville on January 23rd. So everyone that has signed up so far has pretty much been word of mouth and that’s around 50 as of right now. I decided to wait until I had a functioning product/service to start building an audience. I want to be able to grow at a healthy, sustainable rate since my resources are limited. If we go viral, I’m confident in our abilities to cross any bridge we may come to.
O&A: What do you want people to know about fun box monthly?
THOMPSON: This is by skateboarders and for skateboarders. This isn’t about money. This about creating something new and exciting.
O&A: Anything you would like to add?
THOMPSON: Don’t let anything get in your way if you have a dream. Passion is what drives motivation. Motivation is what build dreams. Never be scared to fail. If you are, then you’ve already set yourself up for failure.
