Hit the Blackwater Heritage State Trail

Located in Milton, Florida, the Blackwater Heritage State Trail is the western-most rail trail in Florida. With more than seven miles of paved trail, the Heritage Trail connects to a two-mile stretch of paved trail on Whiting Field Naval Air Station.

This 8.5-mile paved trail winds through the town of Milton and ends at Whiting Field Naval Air Station. It is available for biking, running, walking, roller-skating and horseback riding. Other popular activities are picnicking and bird watching. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail.

The trailhead is located on the corner of Highway 87 and U.S. Highway 90 in Milton, Florida and contains a covered picnic shelter, restrooms, a water fountain and a bicycle rack. The visitor center is approximately one mile from the trailhead and offers two picnic tables and parking.

There is a concession stand at the visitor center where snacks and souvenirs can be purchased. Benches have been located at various points along the trail for visitor convenience.
The equestrian parking lot is located about halfway along the trail, and can be reached by vehicle along Munson Highway (RT 191). There is ample oversized parking available, as well as a newly constructed picnic shelter. Bring plenty of water with you because there are no facilities available north of the visitor center.

Blackwater Heritage Trail is open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days a year. To get there, make your way to the corner of Hwy. 87 and Hwy. 90 in Milton, Florida. There is no fee to use the Blackwater River State Trail. Pets can be taken on the trail, as long as they are on a leash (max. 6 feet) and you clean up after them.
There is a Citizen Support Organization for the Blackwater Heritage State Trail; the Blackwater Heritage Trail, Inc organization was created to assist in the upkeep and beautification of the trail. They have memberships available from $15-$100. Members and volunteers can do many things including greet visitors, conduct tours, help rangers remove exotic plants or maintain the natural beauty of the trail. Groups can adopt trails, portions of a park or even an entire park. Students can participate in internship programs or bring a group to a park to provide community service.
